Anders is well known for two catchphrases around community: “You gotta stay busy” and “I did (insert an absurd number) of steps today.” True to his words, he is always looking for ways to stay active and is quick to lend a helping hand to others.
This past year, Anders moved from Angel House into our new home, St. Joseph House. Thanks to some local Boy Scouts, he has flowerbeds for one of his favorite hobbies – gardening. It was no surprise that Anders quickly connected with his new neighbor, Megan, who has a large garden and needs help tending to it. Their shared love of gardening soon blossomed into a wonderful friendship. Once a week, Anders now joins Megan in her garden. Megan says, “He is an inspiration! His green thumb has encouraged the whole community to spend time in their gardens.”
Over time, Anders and Megan have developed a heartwarming and familiar routine. Each week when Anders arrives, Megan has a cold water bottle waiting for him. She looks forward to learning from him as he shares gardening techniques and plant names. Just this week, he taught her how to identify goldenrods.
Their friendship has been an unexpected gift stemming from his move to St. Joseph House. For Anders, it is a joy to share his love of gardening, and as a bonus, it helps him achieve even more daily steps.
