At this week’s celebration night, I gathered core members and assistants to take a picture around our brand new fireplace. The completion of the fireplace marks the finalization of St Joseph House.
Traditionally, fireplaces provide homes with warmth and a place to gather. While taking this picture, I couldn’t help but reflect on this metaphor. I joined the L’Arche community in January, the coldest month. During these winter months, L’Arche has brought me much laughter and comfort. All the smiling faces in this picture have been daily reminders to keep my head up. In my busy life, I often forget to engage in small conversations and treasure the special moments each day offers. L’Arche reminds me to take a breath and recognize these moments. While it may sound simple, carving out time in my day to reflect, converse and connect with the L’Arche community has been crucial in helping me fight the winter blues.
A few years ago, I moved from Michigan, and I found myself longing to become part of a larger community. L’Arche has become this for me. I am so grateful to be a part of the community, and I look forward to each day I spend at L’Arche.
Thank you L’Arche Chicago!
