Having a L'Arche community in the Chicago area was a desire held by an ecumenical group of people since the 1980's. The group was initiated and inspired by individuals who had once lived in a L'Arche community. While waiting for the community to be born, this group of people sponsored Faith and Sharing retreats, invited Jean Vanier and Henri Nouwen to give presentations, prayed together and made friends with persons with developmental disabilities.

L'Arche Chicago had its beginning June 2000 when assistants David and Laura, along with executive director Sr. Maria welcomed Elbert as the founding core member.

Jean was welcomed as core member in November 2001. Katie came as a new assistant in July 2001.

We welcomed Christianne in April and Tim later in the fall of 2002 as our newest core members.

Megan and Sr. Vicky came as assistants in 2002. Zack & Robert came in the fall of 2003. Carolyn in the summer of '04 and Linnea during the winter of '05 as new assistants.
