Assistants and core members usually rise sometime between 6:00 and 7:00 am. After breakfast and all the other preliminaries, the core members go off to a day program or work in the local community or at a community service workshop. Assistants then take care of ordinary household duties: cleaning, shopping, menu planning, yard work, laundry , record keeping and other organizing and planning.
Depending upon the length of their work day, core members participate in other activities: helping around the house/yard, walking, biking, bowling, writing letters to friends, listening to music, conversing and/or other relaxing activities.
One important aspect of home is that everyone shares the household responsibilities as much as each one is capable. Some people are very good at dusting and vacuuming; others take pride in folding clean laundry; most everyone likes to help cook. All of these menial jobs help each person take ownership of the home.
The evening meal is the heart of our day. One core member and one assistant take turns preparing the meal. We gather around the table and eat leisurely. We laugh and pray and sometimes argue and cry at the table. Decisions about our life together are made around the table. The meal is begun with prayer and ended with a song. We wash the dishes together. Together we leave the kitchen in order.
Creating a home together, recognizing each person's gifts and contributions, moves us away from the idea that assistants "take care of'" core members. The main emphasis is on "living with" not "caring for".
L'Arche tries to celebrate life daily and ritualize communion with each other, with God and all of creation. We celebrate holy days, holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, homecomings, farewells, new arrivals, successful days at work, and many more occasions.
About 8:00 pm we gather for evening prayer. Praying together sometimes includes checking on each person's day. After prayer, people begin to get ready for bed and take some quiet private time to end the day.

L'Arche is a spiritual community based on relationships not tasks.
