participate: board member

What does a board member do?

The Board of Directors supports and supervises the executive director of L’Arche Chicago and oversees the development, update and implementation of financial, accounting/bookkeeping, personnel and other policies of the organization. Together with the executive director, the board develops the organization’s strategic and fund development plan and then supports and reviews the plan’s implementation.

The board of directors has ultimate fiduciary responsibility for the recourses of the organization and ensures that these resources are best employed to carry out the ongoing mission. Board members serve three year terms. L’Arche Chicago expects its board members to be active participants in both community activities and larger L’Arche events and in fundraising.

What is L’Arche Chicago looking for in a board member?

We are currently seeking board members with the following professional skills:

  • Fundraising and grantwriting
  • Accounting and bookkeeping
  • Personnel management
  • Public policy (particularly as related to disability issues)
  • Advocacy and disability services
  • Strategic planning

What is the time commitment expected of a board member?

Board members are expected to attend regular monthly meetings, on the third Wednesday of the month, that generally last from one and a half to two hours. As soon as they feel ready, board members are asked to choose a committee on which to serve. Committees generally meet monthly or bi-monthly for one and a half to two hours. Board members are expected to attend at least one or two of our annual events to announce L’Arche and raise funds. Board members are also encouraged to come to our monthly Community Nights and other celebrations and occasions as they are able.

How do I explore becoming a board member?

If you or someone you know has these skills and is attracted to the fundamental mission of L’Arche, which is life-sharing among people with different abilities and backgrounds, please contact the head of the nominating committee: (TBA )

It is helpful to submit a resume or c.v. along with your indication of interest. The nominating committee will review your skills and experience and the areas where the board needs to build strength. If there is a good fit, a nominating committee member will contact you to schedule a first meeting.

As with all volunteers, we suggest that you come to one or more of our monthly Community Nights
